Custom email domain
With your own domain, your workspace receives email at your address – for example support@mail.your-company.com instead of support.your-company@liza.email. Mail sent to this address lands directly in the chat of the list or task, and replies from Liza go back out from there.
Set it up under Settings → Workspace → Email → Your own domain. Only the workspace owner can change it; the feature is part of the Pro plan.
First: main domain or subdomain?
For Liza, the domain's MX record points to our mail server. All mail sent to this domain then arrives in Liza – and nowhere else.
- Does your company already receive email elsewhere (e.g. Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, IONOS)? Then use a subdomain, such as
mail.your-company.comorliza.your-company.com. You don't need to buy a subdomain – you only create DNS records under the new name. Your existing mailboxes stay untouched. - Use the main domain (
your-company.com) only if it receives no email otherwise.
Careful
Never change the MX record of a domain your mailboxes run on – no more mail would arrive there.
Step by step
- Add the domain. Enter the (sub)domain in the settings and click Add domain. Liza then shows the DNS records you need, with copy buttons.
- Set the records with your domain provider. Wherever your domain is managed (registrar or DNS provider), create the records from the table below. The DKIM record appears about a minute after you add the domain.
- Check DNS. Back in Liza, click Check DNS. Each record shows “found” or “not found yet”. New records often take a few minutes, sometimes up to a few hours, until they are visible everywhere.
- Verified. Once MX and the confirmation record are found, the domain is verified and shortly afterwards active: mail to addresses on the domain arrives.
- Use as default. Your lists' and tasks' readable addresses then live on your domain (
support@mail.your-company.com) – without the workspace handle needed underliza.email. - Pick an address. In the list or task, under Email inbox, choose a name, e.g.
support.
As soon as DKIM and SPF are found as well, replies from Liza go out from your domain. Until then they come from noreply@liza.app with your address as reply-to – replies still land in the right chat.
The records in detail
Liza shows you the exact values; here is what they are for (example domain mail.your-company.com):
Already have an SPF record?
There may be only one SPF record (v=spf1 …) per name. If one exists, add include:spf.liza.email to it instead of creating a second one – mail servers treat two SPF records as an error.
Tips for domain providers
- Enter the name without the domain. Many forms append the domain themselves. Then enter only the first part, e.g.
_liza.mailinstead of_liza.mail.your-company.com– otherwise you get_liza.mail.your-company.com.your-company.com. - Underscores. The records
_liza…,…_domainkey…and_dmarc…start with an underscore. Some providers only allow this in their DNS settings, not under “create subdomain” – and some plans not at all. Then your provider's support or a DNS provider that allows free-form records helps. - MX on the subdomain. Set the MX record for the subdomain, not for the main domain. Some providers call this “own mail server”.
- Cloudflare: MX and TXT records are not proxied – nothing else to watch out for.
What the status means
FAQ
“Not found yet” although I set the record? Wait a little and check again. Common causes: name duplicated (domain appended twice), record on the main domain instead of the subdomain, typo in the value.
Can I add several domains? Yes, up to five. One of them is the default for readable addresses.
What happens when I remove a domain? Mail to addresses on the domain no longer arrives, and readable addresses on the domain are deleted. Addresses under liza.email stay.
What happens after leaving the Pro plan? The domain stays registered but no longer receives or sends mail. With Pro it works again without setting it up anew.
